Privacy Policy
youtdict · effective 2026-04-29
Overview
This policy describes what data youtdict (the Chrome extension and
its server) collects when you use it, how it is stored and what choices
you have over it.
Data we collect
- Account credentials: your email address and a
bcrypt hash of your password. The original password is never
stored. Email is used as your account identifier.
- Personal dictionary: words and phrases you choose
to save from YouTube captions — the text, translation, surrounding
caption context, the video URL and timestamp.
- Translation requests: text snippets you click or
select in captions are sent to our server and forwarded to
Yandex Cloud Translate to produce a translation.
- Usage statistics: per-day count of translation
requests and total character count, used to enforce the free-plan
daily limit and to power simple administrator analytics.
- Technical logs: IP address and request metadata
retained for 14 days for abuse protection and error diagnostics.
What we do NOT collect
- Your YouTube viewing history or contents of other tabs.
- Third-party analytics or advertising cookies.
- Payment data — the extension is free; paid tiers are not
implemented.
Data sharing
Translation text is sent from the extension to the youtdict
server, which forwards it to Yandex Cloud Translate solely to produce a
translation. No other third parties receive your data. We do not sell or
share data for marketing.
Retention and deletion
We keep your data until you delete your account. From the extension
popup → Account menu, click “Delete account” to
permanently remove your account, dictionary and usage history. Only
aggregated, de-identified statistics remain.
Security
Communication between the extension and our server uses TLS.
Passwords are stored as bcrypt hashes. Administrative sessions use
HTTP-only / Secure cookies.
